Welcome to the Pinkie: video project

Welcome to the Pinkie takes place in some of the parks and beaches around Grand Traverse, Benzie, and Leelanau counties in Michigan. I came up with the idea because amongst the chaos in the world I wanted to create a little slice of peace and serenity.

Stating this project I didn’t really have an idea for the story I wanted to tell. And with everyone being in quarantine, and the Nation Parks and trails here in Michigan closed, it made my options more limited than usual. It’s that point in the year where the weather is changing, so I knew I wanted to do something outside. After several emails back and forth with my professor, I formed the idea of a documentary style video showcasing some of the natural beauty around my area.

The next step was filming, refilming, editing, and more editing. I set out on some of the nicest days of the week with my portable charger, phone, and my skateboard. I started with some of my favorite trails, that aren’t part of the National Lakeshore, and started filming. I wasn’t quite sure how it would go since I don’t have much experience with video. So I filmed just about everything.

With nature itself being the subject it was a little difficult to decide what would be interesting and what I should leave out. And since I didn’t have access to the Lakeshore, I made due.

Infographic: Social Media and their numbers

Social media have been around since the early 2000s. With the growth of technology, these platforms are now ever more present in today’s world. They allow users to create and make a version of their world for others to see and share. These top five platforms are ever-growing.

Five of the main social media range in times when they launched. From the early 2000s to late 2010s, new social media are still surfacing and older ones are still proving their relevance.

This graph compares the daily and monthly users between some of the top social media: Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Tumblr, and Tik Tok. A quick glance at the graph shows that even though Tik’s Tok is a relatively new media, it is frequently used by tons of people.

For the most part, companies are based in California and affect people worldwide. With the number of resources and opportunities, California has to offer it’s almost not surprising the more used companies are based on the West Coast.

Let’s see which site you use the most. These companies effect just about everyone from early teens to late 30s and 40s. An important part of the 21st century is our technology, and now with social distancing, social media help people to stay connected even more.

It’s Corona Season

The spread of COVID-19 across the United States has caused several states to shutdown. One of the first states to go into quarantine was Michigan. Starting in Detroit and working its way North, Corona has struck fear into many families. Even the necessary grocery run has become an anxiety ridden experience for some. My family has turned to board games and movies to try and stay sane during this period that seems to never end.

The COVID-19 virus has disrupted the day to day life for all of us, to say the very least. The Emerson family has managed quarantine together fairly well considering its five members haven’t shared the same roof in at least six years. The youngest, Leah, age 18, has picked back up on sewing, an activity she hasn’t done since she was eleven. Mr. and Mrs. Emerson, Dani and Jill, have tried to implement games into the daily routine of the household. Paige, the eldest, prefers to win during game time which makes the whole idea less fun than quarantine itself. I, the middle child, have taken refuge in the four walls of my bedroom. Homework has become more fun than subjecting myself to the consistent ridicule of my family. Netflix and Hulu have become the norms in my day to day routine. By the end of this isolation period, I think the Emersons will have had plenty of ‘family time’ to last them a lifetime. Through the arguing and close quarters, we manage to maintain some sanity by escaping to our own little sanctuaries. Paige’s is a park up the road, Leah’s has become her phone more than ever, my mothers’ is her job, my fathers’ is, and always has been, the basement and mine. Mine is my headphones and our 10 square acres of woods. Hopefully we’ll remain sain enough to rejoin society after quarantine.

TRACK 1: A CMU student has an interest in politics and wants to make a career out of it. Lance Batho currently has a job in that field. He says that this is a stepping stone for his future.

ACT: I currently work for the republican party, doing like interning down there doing legislative affairs for the speaker of the house. But I definitely want to join the private sector and work uh inside the private sector for a company. It doesn’t matter if it’s bipartisan and yeah whatever company I like the most and that I’m passionate about and that pays the best is the one I would like to work for.”
